Seven No-Cook Backpacking Meals That Aren't Instant Noodles

Easy Travel Meal Editorial · · 7 min read

Real protein, real calories, no stove and no fuel canister. What to buy in any supermarket in any country.

Carrying a stove costs you weight, fuel and a border argument at the airport. Skipping it is entirely viable if you shop around shelf-stable protein rather than around cooking.

The core kit is the same everywhere: ring-pull tinned fish or beans, flatbread, a hard cheese, a nut butter, and something acidic in a small bottle to stop it all tasting the same on day four.

Build meals, not snacks

A no-cook meal needs a protein, a carbohydrate and a flavour. Tuna, tortilla and hot sauce is a meal. A handful of nuts is not, and you will be hungry again within the hour.

Buy tins at your destination rather than carrying them. They are the heaviest thing in the pack and available almost everywhere on earth.
